I’ve just got back from Las Vegas, and honestly… what a place.
Every time I visit, I swear it gets busier, bigger and somehow even more ridiculous. More people, more hotels, more shows, more restaurants, more experiences, more lights, more everything.
And it got me thinking…
How do we get so hooked on Vegas?
Obviously, there’s the gambling, the entertainment, the sunshine, the hotels, the food and the whole “what happens in Vegas…” mentality.
But from a marketing perspective?
Vegas is absolutely fascinating.
Because everywhere you look, someone is trying to sell you something.
Welcome to the city of constant marketing
Walk down the Las Vegas Strip and you’re essentially walking through one enormous marketing campaign.
Hotels are competing for your attention from every direction. Huge digital screens promote upcoming shows. Posters advertise residencies and concerts. Restaurants showcase their menus. Attractions are positioned to make you stop, look and take a photo.
And then there are the hotels themselves. They aren't simply hotels.
They're brands, experiences and destinations all rolled into one.
You don't just see a hotel and think, “That's somewhere to sleep.”
You see the architecture, the giant signs, the restaurants, the bars, the shows, the casinos, the pools and the experiences happening inside.
And once you're there, there's always something else being marketed to you.
The power of FOMO
One thing Vegas does incredibly well is FOMO — the fear of missing out.
- You might walk past a poster advertising a huge artist performing that week.
- Then you see another advert for a comedy show.
- Then another for a residency.
- Then a digital billboard promoting a new restaurant.
Then you walk past another hotel and suddenly you're thinking:
“Maybe we should go there tonight…”
Las Vegas constantly gives you another reason to spend, explore, book and experience.
And it works. The city itself is designed to make you curious.
Even Visit Las Vegas describes the destination as constantly evolving, with new experiences appearing all the time — meaning there is always something new to discover, even if you've been before.
And that's excellent marketing.
Content is absolutely everywhere
As someone who works in digital marketing, I couldn't help but notice the sheer amount of content everywhere.
Screens. Billboards. Posters. Social-media-worthy installations. Videos. Event promotions. Brand activations.
And it isn't surprising that Vegas actively embraces social media. The official tourism organisation even promotes experiences specifically for their social-media appeal, encouraging visitors to capture and share their experiences.
Because here's the thing:
Vegas doesn't just market to you. It encourages you to market it for them.
You take the photo. You post the video. You tag the hotel. You share the show. Your friends see it. Suddenly, someone else wants to visit Vegas.
That's user-generated content doing some serious heavy lifting.
So, what can small businesses learn from Vegas?
You probably don't have a giant digital billboard.
You probably don't have a hotel covered in thousands of lights.
You probably don't have a celebrity residency to promote.
But you do have something Vegas understands incredibly well:
Attention matters.
- Your business needs to be visible.
- Your branding needs to be recognisable.
- Your content needs to give people a reason to stop scrolling.
- Your website needs to make people want to explore.
- Your social media needs to remind people that you're there.
-
And, most importantly, you need to give people a reason to choose you.
Would Vegas work without the marketing?
And after another trip to fabulous Las Vegas, I think I've come home with more than just a suitcase full of souvenirs…
I've come home with a few more marketing ideas too.
Vegas, you magnificent marketing machine. Until next time…!
